Frequently Asked Questions

Montusi is an all year round destination, but different seasons offer different experiences:
  • Summer months are warmer – October to April are warm enough for evenings outdoors.
  • Mid- to late-summer is great for wild swimming: the rivers and dams have all filled up by early December – taking a refreshing dip on a mountain hike is our favourite thing to do!
  • April and May are still warm and the mountains are at their most beautiful: crisp and clear days with bright blue skies make a perfect backdrop for great mountain adventures.
  • May, June and July are when the aloes flourish – Stunning Sun-birds and Gurney’s Sugar-birds are the entertainers of Aloe Season.
  • June, July and August are the months for cosy winter getaways with days warm enough for outdoor activities, but chilly nights perfect for sherry at the fireside.
  • September sees the birds returning with flocks of Widows, Wydahs and Weavers gracing the lawns in their juvenile colours while the veldt awakens from the dormant winter – wild-flowers begin to dot the landscape.
  • October is the wild-flower month.
  • November sees the landscape turn from yellow to green.

Yes. Our kitchen is able to cater to all dietary restrictions. Please let us know at the time of booking if there are dietary restrictions so that we can prepare full and delicious menus: the more pre-arrival information we have, the better we can serve!

Montusi is not Halaal or Kosher. We can provide menus that avoid certain foods, but the kitchen is not free of pork and alcohol products.

Montusi offers a space where guests can do everything or nothing at all. Those folk that aren’t keen on active pursuits, find the lodge grounds a lovely setting for bird-watching, reading, journaling, drawing and painting. Montusi is one of the best spots for landscape and bird photography. Self-drive trips around the area are easy to manage as the roads are reasonable and maps are plentiful. Relaxation massage or a picnic are also fabulous ways to enjoy the Montusi Experience.

Our tap water is straight off the mountains and is treated to keep it perfect for human consumption all year round.  It is routinely tested by a third party to ensure all is as it should be.

All the accommodation has wi-fi and there is also wi-fi in the main lounge.  There is no charge for wi-fi use.  There is no wi-fi access in the dining room.

The roads are tarred all the way to the lodge.  There are stretches of potholes in the last 10km, but all vehicles can manage the drive.

No, the lodge suites are equipped with GAS fires.  The self-catering cottages have wood fires, but we have wood for sale at reception.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate any pets at Montusi.

We do not allow drones at Montusi – this protects the privacy of other guests and keeps horse-riders safe (our horses are not drone-savvy).

Montusi is currently unaffected by regular load shedding, however in the event of a electricity outage we have a back-up generator. The generator is switched off between 22:30 and 06:30.
